Pavel Haintz is the Chief Executive Officer of Think Sensor Research Inc., which he founded in 2008, specializing in navigation and sonar sensor solutions for the marine industry. Pavel has over 25 years of experience in sonar system design, adaptive signal processing, and marine technology. Previously, Pavel served as a Research Engineer at Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd., where he contributed to the development of sonar systems for industrial and surveillance applications, including diver tracking multibeam sonar systems and structure scanning sector scan sonars. Pavel also has significant experience in uncrewed system development in both aerial and underwater systems. During his undergraduate and graduate studies at SFU, Pavel founded and lead the Aerial Robotics Group working on aerial robots converting RC airplanes and RC helicopters to autonomous flying machines. Pavel holds a Master of Engineering in Engineering Science and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Systems Engineering, both from Simon Fraser University.
Dr. John S. Bird received a diploma in electronics from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He worked for the Defence Research Establishment Pacific, Victoria, British Columbia, for eight years where he was engaged in signal processing and detection studies related to passive sonar. For six years he continued these studies but in the context of land and space-based surveillance radars while on loan to the Communications Research Center from the Defence Research Establishment Ottawa. During this time he also worked in the area of satellite spread spectrum communications. For twenty eight years Dr. Bird was a professor in the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, where his research interests included signal processing, underwater acoustics, sonar, bottom mapping, autonomous underwater vehicles, machine intelligence, autonomous navigation, limnology, and lake exploration.
